Mentorship Programme

What is the Iphutheng Mentoring Programme?

Vision & Objectives

The Iphutheng Mentorship Programme was conceptualised in 2018, as an organic extension of the learning support initiatives that various community groups were already providing at Iphutheng. It lined up with Iphutheng and its partners’ commitment to hands-on justice.

The programme aims to improve learner’s self-assurance and self confidence and increase learners’ interest in and appreciation of the world. This is facilitated through the development of healthy relationships, being a strong role model and exposing the learner to a variety of different, stimulating environments. The programme endeavours to create positive motivational experiences for learners to imagine the possibilities they can live into rather than a predetermined expectation to live up to.

How

Volunteers mentor 2-3 learners from Iphutheng Primary School. The mentor spends about three hours, every other week during school terms, with the learner. The mentor arranges different activities, either on a school day between 14:15 and 17:00 or on a weekend day.

Where

The mentor meets the learners at the school and either stays at the school or transports the learners to an arranged activity.

Duration of the programme

A mentor commits to the programme for two terms at a time with one group of learners.
